I don’t know if it’s because I’m out of higher ed now, but listening to professor panelists snark about the limited historical context or world views of their students cuts different now and it honestly feels like punching down.
Like of course students have a limited world view; show me someone who was smarter and wiser in their twenties compared to their thirties and beyond. Saying things like “students who think history began when X happened” is really snide. It’s the kind of thing that is fine when you’re venting at the bar, it feels mean on a panel.
@TeamMidwest also depending on the subject matter a lot of adults are pretty fucking bad on historical context, signed someone who explained internet infrastructure to a Financial Times columnist once
@TeamMidwest ooof for sure!! feel like in general a lotta academics fear the vulnerability that comes with being humble enough to admit to not knowing everything
@ingrid not just adults but even many professors are ignorant AF about tons of stuff, at least evidenced by how many historians I encountered who were sure they knew how to do my archivist job better than myself
