Controversial retail take

I've used them and all but honestly it is not clear to me that bookshop dot org is genuinely better on a warehouse labor conditions level than Amazon? But would be happy to be told they are actually good and fair employers or whatever

@ingrid I do not like them. They are e-lit doing a monopoly end-run for a book distributor with a nonsense model of giving a pittance to used book stores that say they are indie brick and mortar. I just signed up for https://tertulia.com/ for the next year and moved all my books-by-friends preorders there.

@maxfenton ohhh tertulia seems cool!!

Controversial retail take

@ingrid I figured for $25/year it checks my boxes of "want to feel like I'm saving money vs retail", "want to be able to preorder books by friends when they post about them”, “want the dopamine hit of free shipping”

Controversial retail take

@ingrid I think they're just dropshippers, no?

Controversial retail take

@ingrid the case for Bookshop is much more anti-Amazon than it is pro-Bookshop. The revenue share (not huge) to local bookstores helps a little bit it is not vastly different from say Barnes & Noble
