@scattermoon Witches town died completley in a burst of fedi drama like three years ago sadly.
@ada this feels like a stable website to be moving to lol
@scattermoon i think i just said that the fediverse is like a community accountability process, and i was right: Twee, unstable, racist, and sometimes useful.
@scattermoon (but also instance matters a lot- my instance is like 10 people who are friends, yours should be stable but also full of randos. Thankfully it's quite easy to move instance now)
@ada yeah this seemed a good place to land for the time being as it's very much the hub. If I stick around, I'll find somewhere else. Not sure quite where as I have deliberately always tried to be in many different social groups.
@scattermoon thankfully you can do multi account, like @chican3ry @chican3ry or just follow/interact across servers.
@ada @chican3ry oh I see. I do feel very much like I don't know what I'm doing here still and I don't know how to find everyone either.
@scattermoon the on ramp is STEEP tbqh
@ada @scattermoon have been here a while and setting up an instance reminded me I still don't know how it works.
It's most familiar to people who were online in 1995 or thereabouts because hacker culture is quite conservative I guess. I appreciate some aspects of that but am learning to become more self-skeptical of why.
@chican3ry @ada I've seen you talking about it a lot and it's honestly been quite overwhelming! I just want a Twitter 2 basically even if I know this place is not that.
@scattermoon @ada I don't think anything is ever going to be a Twitter 2, and having a community owned social media infrastructure is by nature going to be much more balkanised and take a while for the dust to settle.
@chican3ry @ada just going to take some getting used to. Already odd not be able to QT things for context purposes. And what should be CW'd.
@scattermoon @ada the QT thing I think is likely to change - not least because Nazi instances already have built QT features into their fediverse connected platforms so the argument that QTs are being restricted to prevent abuse doesn't hold any water.
@chican3ry @ada yeah, I appreciate that people think QT = dunking on someone, but it's nearly always used to add thoughts on other tweets be they news items or topics from other users. It decentralises conversations.
@chican3ry @ada literally just shows up as a link for me.
@chican3ry @ada huh, I assume that must be instance-based?
@scattermoon @ada or maybe just my android client tusky
@chican3ry @scattermoon @ada yeah, it's a link preview
@flippac @scattermoon @ada that's an inadequate version of what wrote quote tweets started as
@chican3ry @scattermoon @ada Yep, though tbh it's always going to be possible to point people at a toot without being visible to the OP or people reading the original.
So a lot of it's about that back link.
@flippac @scattermoon @ada sure but people will like the nice interface
@chican3ry @scattermoon @ada Sure! But that's doable in the "people can write clients and proxies if needed" sense. Doesn't need a protocol change, for example.
@chican3ry @scattermoon @ada If Mastodon-the-server doesn't support it, that's still annoying - but there are many ways to handle it.
@flippac @scattermoon @ada Mastodon isn't even the only activity pub server is what I'm saying and people on Mastodon will likely demand features that are available on others or move with their feet.
@chican3ry @flippac @scattermoon OTOH I like fedi not being wide participation(or my part of it), and reports of twitters(the communitiy, not the company) death continue to be greatly exagerated.
@chican3ry @flippac @scattermoon Yeah, but are you going to get all of them? If the tweet federates then your instance won't get the headers(I think? I'm not a fedi expert)
@ada @flippac @scattermoon no you're not but you're also not going to get them appearing from instances that refuse to participate in fedi wide search either.
@ada @flippac @scattermoon being able to pull up a bunch of referrer headers for your own posts would be alright I think
