I'm currently doing novel historical search reviewing documents that have not been scanned or OCRed or in some cases translated into English, and something about the rush to rewrite the matter of the world with a good-enough chatbot using a good-enough dataset feels like an invitation from power to abandon questions the machine can't answer

@ingrid This goes straight to my strongest disappointment or fear engendered by how widespread the impression that ChatGPT has the potential to replace all of our needs. What an impoverished sense of the history, depth, and breadth of human written expression that reveals!

@ingrid I have many mixed feelings. Technology never fully solved the access problem because getting people into a place, isn't the same as making all the materials accessible.
In that sense non-digitized archives have power! But also archives are gate kept by structural power! 😩
