I blogged about the burning waymos because I didn't want to actually think about my dissertation lol https://placing.technology/reverse-engineering-the-incinerated-waymo
@ingrid I think the burning Waymos actually could hasten the end of self-driving cars as a tech-world obsession, inasmuch as they're going to make car insurers take a hard look at what they're charging for autonomous vehicles, and quickly turn that dial to 11.
@lrhodes @ingrid i also like how their getting torched is a reality check on the actual on-the-ground popularity, outside of people who live in a bubble of tech optimism. people aren't stupid, they know that it's a cop camera on wheels and exists to create a new monopoly where labor is utterly powerless, and they know how much the things fuck up and grind to a halt in utter confusion at situations even below average human drivers handle easily.
@jplebreton @ingrid I would guess that the tech company's servility and financial contributions toward the administration enacting these anti-immigrant policies have also significantly lowered any good will the protestors feel toward them. Basically: "You're going to contribute to the people oppressing us? Then we'll make sure you contribute to our resistance, too."
@ingrid Mate, your topic looks really interesting. I am biased because I've been contributing to @openstreetmap for years (& teaching people how to). It's obvious to me that there's soooo much to say about the embedded labour in geo software and data
@ingrid you have waymo important things to be doing
@quaad slow clap
@ingrid i’ve had a different eno tune stuck in my head (burning waymos give you so much more)
