Based on the premise stated by hooks (1994) that education is “the practice of freedom”, pedagogy and teaching in this project is a form of applied research. STEM education more often than not resembles a practice of compliance rather than freedom. This is not solely a matter of STEM education emphasizing preparing students for employment in large firms (although that certainly plays a part). Within the model of the 16-week semester, threading theory into applied technical education also can feel daunting for students: if the learning curve for a particular technical skillset feels steep, adding critical analysis of the technology on top of it can be overwhelming. But it can also make technologies less intimidating by making it clear to students that they aren’t dumb or bad at coding because they don’t intuitively understand Javascript, a silly joke language originally written in ten days by one guy that’s been built up into a load-bearing programming language like Krang from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
