buttondown.com/perfectsentence this week in sentences: monopolies, melancholy, Chicago, failed eel, all of its legs, generally defined, rat chaos, taxidermy, texturally, outer space, his own death, no polite, pursue, brothers, persuasive, optimism

doing oral history transcript corrections again and just burst out laughing returning to the moment someone who worked at Esri for nearly thirty years said to me "no, shape files suck"

Sent draft chapters to my committee, very anticlimactic end to writing 28K words in 12 days to just send an email

28,937 which is not a lot words-wise but I think...these two chapters are done or at least as done as they can be for sending to my committee?

thinking about her (the horrible eye in Alien Earth)

the good thing is there is a pretty vibrant world of academic scholarship on OSM (albeit mostly in the realm of data analysis rather than ethnography) so I can lean on that a bit if I don't want to get into Specific Annoying Guy stuff

on the one hand, overture maps is such a crazy thing to see 20 years after the peak of corporate involvement in open source geo stuff being like, openlayers

on the other hand, i really don't want to write about the internal politics of openstreetmap because it is mostly a lot of guys being weird and mad and reading the mailing list is annoying

7 words away from 3000 words added today, what if I just write "maps!" 7 times

working title for this final section of this dissertation chapter: "This isn’t even my final form: Overture Maps Foundation and the post-ZIRP landscape for open source geospatial software"

Look I appreciate you being vulnerable and trusting me with this but being obsessed with the Founding Fathers feels like something you should talk to a therapist about

dissertation update: I reduced the time Eric and Alex at Mapbox tried to get OpenStreetMap to drop the sharealike clause to a footnote, which feels wrong because it was so funny

another way to spin this: good news, I have two chapters lol

LMAO I am approaching 20K words for this dissertation CHAPTER about geospatial software in the 2000s-2010s and I am JUST getting to explaining Mapbox, my committee is going to be so annoyed
