Now starting to get to the point where this post has reached exit velocity out of my own orbit and into whatever kind of nutty world this guy who thinks The Onion is like Der Sturmer lives in

Honestly, if there isn't a way to mute responses to posts, I'm going to have a hard time continuing to use Mastodon. There are just too many notifications.

@parkermolloy I’ve been muting (via the website) every post I make that goes wide and then just checking replies if I remember. Necessary for my brain.

@kissane @parkermolloy i had to change my client to one that enabled muting by convo. they don't all have the capacity by default

@oddletters @parkermolloy Muting arbitrary branches in a conversation is my grail quest here. The only late twitter addition I really liked.

@kissane @oddletters 100% I like engaging with responses, but there's something about replies that come in a day or two after a post goes up that are almost always just not worth it

@parkermolloy @oddletters You can see the infection point just scrolling replies, they go along like conversations for a few hours and then fling themselves off the cliff

@kissane @oddletters Yeah, like right now it's gotten to the point where I posted an Onion link yesterday that got a lot of boosts and I somehow ended up with people turning the replies into a weird open mic type event

@parkermolloy @kissane @oddletters the un-algorithmic nature of Mastodon and how it will just keep something alive for *so long* is mystifying to me. Twitter stuff burns bright & fast, Masto can just keep a post going forever and it's diminishing returns every time.

@dansinker @parkermolloy @kissane @oddletters Interesting, I always thought the effect was opposite, but it might be an audience scale thing. On twitter, if you log in after a day, the algorithm might surface the post of someone you like from 12 hours ago. Whereas here you'll likely never see it. But for bigger accounts like y'all's, it's like the eternal beach ball at a concert.
