It's wild to think like ten years ago the energy consumption of data centers was basically treated as a non-issue and now it's used in weird propaganda framings where (implicitly usesless, bad) "cat videos" hinder (implicitly good, important) ammunition manufacture. If it were any other tech company's data center or an IX or even crypto I think this framing would be very, very different.

As dumb as this whole song and dance of academia can be and as tired as I am, it is neat that I've built up a pretty strong case for where two of the kinds of rocks in the first mid-century digital computers probably came from—knowledge that as far as I can tell no one has put together previously

@yehoak I was this close to being like "fuck it, I'll convert my thesis to LaTex" because that's the only other formatting option my university accepts

@TeamMidwest I like Ulysses a lot? Notion is also good and has a decent Zotero plugin. My main gripes with Word are the interface is by default overwhelming and I have to click too many things to make a footnote.

I haven't used Word in probably over a decade? This is maybe the worst word processing experience of my life, feel like it wasn't this annoying when I was a teenager
