done today, for a new chapter: 1,729—not a ton but there's kind of more thinking-through-the-structure work that has to go in here and I got a later start because I did a research interview in the morning

the good thing is there is a pretty vibrant world of academic scholarship on OSM (albeit mostly in the realm of data analysis rather than ethnography) so I can lean on that a bit if I don't want to get into Specific Annoying Guy stuff

on the one hand, overture maps is such a crazy thing to see 20 years after the peak of corporate involvement in open source geo stuff being like, openlayers
on the other hand, i really don't want to write about the internal politics of openstreetmap because it is mostly a lot of guys being weird and mad and reading the mailing list is annoying
