good _lord_ i need mastodon app that lets me mute replies to specific posts, anyone want to help me out here

welp that took off surprisingly fast for a 7:30 AM on a Sunday post. time to sign off for a while.

@tb just a note: per Steenson, the Lab was not developed as a "design school" like the Stanford D-School, etc. it was designed as a funnel for military research monies (specifically from the Navy). it was only later that the "design" ethos expanded as funds from non-military sources were pursued

@pl sorry, they are "peer supporters," not professional therapists (thank god). the people on the recieving end of the ChatGPT crafted messages were still not informed until afterwards

turns out i never did an post: hi, i'm mols. i'm an academic working in the science and technology studies/comm studies/info studies space. i do work on the philosophy, theory, and history of digital technologies and "innovation economies." i used to write a lot about digital activism. i'm currently on book leave writing about the role of east coast financiers in the development of venture capital policy in the 1970s. you can find most of my work at oddletters.com

@pl sure looks like no clear consent on the part of folks in mental health crisis to me.

@pl his correction indicated that the therapists gave consent, patients were not informed that ChatGPT was being used until later, and after they knew ChatGPT had been used, they were unhappy about it.

@whvholst unfortunately this is not the same person but it would be perfect if it was

if you would like to know more about the history of the Media Lab and the way it encourages these practices in its students and spinoff companies, i highly recommend Molly Wright Steenson's ARCHITECTURAL INTELLIGENCE and Morgan Ames's THE CHARISMA MACHINE

i suppose this is also the time to note that the Media Lab was founded as the pseudo independent entity it is because Negroponte hated doing grant reporting and ethics review and a substantial part of its whole _vibe_ is dropping untested technologies on populations with little supervision and nebulous consent.

it is really not surprising to me that someone who got their PhD there in 2014 (so we would have overlapped) thinks that this is an ok way to treat people

@joshuafoust there are lots of us who say that all the time. come sit at our table, we have jalapeno poppers

oh i see that someone who got his phd at the media lab decided to use ChatGPT as a therapy standin for thousands of patients without their clear consent, was surprised when the patients hated it, and is now surprised that people are pissed about it.

wild.

oh i also see that he declared the study exempt from IRB and ethics review because it was for a business with no intent to publish in an academic journal and he thinks filing for IRB approval is hard.

_wild_.

@gwbstr it's happily just neuro-ing along! only thinking about rice!

if i wanted to watch THE SINGING DETECTIVE would anyone want to a synchronous watch with me

what electronic home appliance have you had the longest? i realized today that i have had my zojirushi rice cooker for ~18 years and my cuisineart electric kettle for ~15. our food processor with the street legal motor was owned by alex's grandmother but also i dont touch it bc it scares me.
